Casual shirts with kilts

I have not worn a T-shirt with my kilts because it doesn't feel right on me (but, I look good in anything ). I do think that the T-shirt look is okay for younger guys. Afterall, the athletes at the Highland games are wearing them.

Here is my problem with the jacobite shirt. Unless your wearing a great kilt, you are really mixing two different eras of clothes. I'd wear a more modern shirt with a modern kilt. Just my thoughts, for what that's worth.

I dare say most "jacobite" style shirts sold are worn with modern tailored kilt described by TW, as opposed to by reenactors wearing the great kilt. (Its actually apparently not authentic for that era either.)

Although some people object to jacobite shirts because they are not traditional, I wouldn't let that stop me from wearing one if you want to. Congrats on the upcoming family wedding. Be sure to post pictures when its done!

I've worn t-shirts, polos, button short sleeves, and fishing/safari type shirts. My favorite tend to be the fishing/safari type shirts. But they are also my favorite when wearing pants also.

I have a couple of "Hawaiian print" shirts I may have to try with my saffron.

I've been trying the Hawaiian shirts out with my kakhi canvas kilt when that is the flavor of the event like that pit fire luau picture I have in the gallery.

I am new to the kilted community, though I have long been proud of my Scottish/Irish heritage. My brother is getting married soon and he will be wearing the full garb. It's a beach wedding, so the rest of us guys are going for a more dressed-down look. I was kinda thinking of wearing a jacobite style shirt with my Heritage of Ireland kilt, but I'm a bit torn when it comes to footwear. Since it's on the beach, I'm kinda leaning towards some type of sandals. Does anyone have any suggestions (on the shoes or the shirt)?

If it was me, I would wear the same sorts of, or similar, shirt and footwear that the other men are.

To me here is a difference between dressing correctly and dressing appropriately. If everyone else is dressing incorrectly (according to my lights) I probably would also. A kilt is dress, not a costume, so I wouldn't want to stand out as if I were dress for a costume party by dressing so differently than others, nor would I want others to feel out of place if I had dress more correctly than they.

When in doubt, ask the groom. Or bride.

Ya, that's pretty much what I was trying to say back there, but wasn't sure what everyone else at the wedding would be wearing.
I still think you can go dressy casual or nice looking casual with a polo shirt and some dressy slides even if there are some t-shirts and all being worn.

Whatever is comfortable, will do fine! When I want to be a little more "descent" I wear a short-sleeved khaki button-up. It's actually a cotton summer khaki shirt (U.S.Navy). You can get them in many of the Army/Navy Surplus stores, or, a reasonable copy at Sears or J.C. Penney's!! The cotton is great for the Glakes region (I'm a native of Northern Mich.), and the short sleeves give you lots of air when it's muggy!

TokenWizard, I wore a "jacobite" shirt for my wedding. I hired the entire outfit from a well-respected kilt supplier in Australia and hauled the lot over to the USA for my wedding.


Once the honeymoon was over, I hauled the lot back to Australia and returned it. They were very kind and charged me only the same rate as a weekend hire.

I don't see anything wrong with a jacobite shirt at a wedding - as long as you don't upstage the bride, everything will be fine.

Match your colors. Tuck it in. Other than that, whatever you'd wear with any other pair of pants, you can wear with a kilt.
