Ghillie Brogue/Bog Shoe Pattern?
Hi Guys
I dont know if anyone can help but i am trying to source a pattern for old style Ghillie Brogue/Bog Shoes (see photo) ive searched the internet to no avail and the only pair i have found are very high priced.
If anyone has a pair of these or anything similar i would be very interested to hear from you...i would even be willing to pay for a pattern of these (a pattern could be taken off a pair)
Thanks

You might check with kevinkinney of Empire Canvas Works. He posts on this board and I have seen something he made that is similar.
If you get a pattern, let me know. I would be interested in aquiring one myself.

Err, umm... our plan was to sell boots, not patterns.

I was looking at some ghillie bog shoes at a Ren fair shoe shop the other day. They were kind of weird. The toe was fairly squared and it looked like it had a seperat piece of leather from the sole to where each lace hole was, even around the heel area. I think you could have unlaced them and layed them out flat kind of like taking all the pieces of a car body and aranging them flat on the floor...
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

Hopefully this may help. I have a home-made pattern for these. Simple to make too.
The pattern is sized to my feet though - should be simple enough to alter. Old illustrations served as inspiration for the 'design'.
Not the best photo... it was cropped from a larger photograph made after a long moist morning spent re-enacting on Skye.

Smoke and Fire pattern. Looks like this might be the one you are looking for. It's down the page about three items or so.
I've used Smoke and Fire for re-enacting and period patterns for several years. Good people (no affiliation other than as a customer.)

Or, you can modify a moccasin kit like this (by cutting off the side flaps), to get a pair like those in Steve's photo. The "ghillie brogues" derived from the Smoke and Fire pattern have a multitude of separate "tabs" (which really aren't correct for highland "cuarans"), and which allow in all manner of pebbles and dirt!

My pattern does very much resemble a modified moccasin, though mine came about by trial & errors.
I used elkskin, which is unusually strong and soft as deerskin. Also - I stitched a sole and heel onto the bottom. More for modern day comfort and avoiding bruises from stepping on pebbles.
Lemme know if'n you'd like a pattern copy.

steve
