I think folks are missing a key word...it is customary for men to wear kilts to a formal event in Scotland. Outside of Scotland, it doesn't appear to be the custom that most men will wear a kilt to a formal event. Most men still wear trousers to these events.
That shouldn't stop us from trying to change the custom around the world.

OK - I'm doing my part!
It is my custom to wear the kilt to formal events...... but it sounds better than it really is, 'cause I wear the kilt to everything except the nudist park, and the shower!
