I always feel like an idiot when I'm out and about and not wearing my kilt and I see someone who is.

Once or twice, in the early days, I didn't wear my kilt while north of the border. I, too, felt bereft and have worn it every time since, even if it's just for a day's shopping on Prince's Street - we live about 90 minutes south of Edinburgh.
Cheers

I flew to DC while kilted. While waiting for the plane, I ducked into the men's room. While standing at the urinal with a bunch of other people, a guy walked in and when he saw me, started whistling "Scotland the Brave" as he walked down the line to find an open place.
On the way back, while checking in on Alaska Air, the very nice looking ticket agent complimented me on it and which sparked a nice conversation.
On the plane, my seatmates didn't say a thing, even when I unfolded my 6'-4" frame from the window seat to make my way to the restroom, or tried to sweep the pleats once back in my seat.
