Wearing a kilt but not being Scottish

I want to buy a traditional Scottish outfit and wear it to formal occasions. But isn't it ridiculous for a non Scottish person to wear a tartan kilt?
I have not one Scottish drop in my blood (mainly viking and celtic) so I'm thinking of the comments; ''Why are you wearing a kilt? You'r not Scottish!''
Do you guys think it's okay for a none Scottish person to wear a Scottish outfit with a tartan kilt to, for example, a wedding?

It sounds like you want to dress well for this wedding and look sharp and proper. I think that's good enough.

Here's my thinking on this, you don't need to be Scottish to put on a kilt, you just need the courage to wear it!

Is it wrong for a person who isn't a cowboy to wear jeans or a cowboy hat?
Is it wrong for a person who isn't a baseball player to wear a baseball cap?
Is it wrong for a person who doesn't play tennis to wear tennis shoes?
Is it wrong for a person who doesn't ride a bicycle to wear bicycle shorts?

I feel that any person should wear what he or she desires - it's known as freedom.

There are no rules, make sure you mention that to the kilt police if you meet them

Of course you don't have to be Scottish. While many of the members here do have some Scottish blood, many do not.

Many nations in Europe have their own tartans. I don't believe Iceland does, but other Norse countries like Norway and Sweden do.

Look around, find a tartan you feel a connection to (whatever it may be), and get yourself a kilt.

Not only that, but there are many strong connections between Scotland and the Nordic countries, going all the way back to the Norsemen.

If you have that issue, just consider me - I'm Asian, not Caucasian. There's always that undercurrent of insecurity when I wear a kilt.

A really good friend who's very supportive of my kilt wearing finally said that he thinks is "surreal." (It's surreal to see an Asian wear something considered very western). To which I said - nothing he says or anyone, for that matter, will make me stop from wearing my kilts.

I was asked if I was Irish at HomeDepot, wearing my khaki xkilt -- he may have been yanking my chain. [A friend told me to just say "Yes" to that question. ]


[With recent threads of photo request stories; great stories, btw] nobody's ever asked to have their picture taken with me (for the kilt, at least), not that I care for that; most likely because I certainly don't look Scottish (or white). Why would a touristy stranger have a pic taken with an "incomplete" Scot. If that ever happens, you'll be the first to know...lol. [This is not self-pity, I'm just stating my observations and opinion].

I am proud to be in a kilt, especially because I've created them myself.

It does take courage (even more for me).

I posted my thoughts because the thread's title is "Wearing a kilt but being non-Scottish," which I think covers a concern and opinion that I have, which may be a very small minority in this esteemed forum. I inadvertently started a discussion about having/ not having Scottish ancestry a while back. The consensus seems to be that being Scottish is NOT a prerequisite for wearing the kilt. Besides, you said you had celtic heritage. There are Welsh cilts and Irish kilts to choose from as well.
