I think it is perfectly fine to wear at any time. Dress tartans seem to me to be a good way to carry a little brightness with you. Especially on a dull day! 
I have always tempered my killing with respect for the game pursued. I see the animal not only as a target but as a living creature with more freedom than I will ever have.
