Indeed. That's why I really LOVE the answer proposed on page 1 of this thread. Happened to me the other day whilst kilted.
"Are you Scottish?"
"Nope. Not at all."
"And you're wearing a kilt...?"
"Do you wear blue jeans?"
"uhh. Yeah. Why?"
"Are you a cowboy?"
"Touche."
Depending on my mood, I may also point out the argument that UK has on their website: "If women had an appendage between their legs, I can virtually guarantee you that they would not be wearing pants."

As a person with absolutely zero Scot in my bloodline, I say wear the kilt and enjoy it. When people ask me if I'm Scot, and I say "No, Italian", they usually look at me like I've got a screw loose. After they get over the shock, I just tell them that the Romans invaded Scotland B.C., so there has to be a connection! They'll usually laugh and get over it, but sometimes, if I'm just tired of explaining my love of the kilt, I just lie! I tell them, "Yes, a little on my mother's side". Sometimes, it's just easier!
