That's a good starting point, but if it's a tartan kilt I'd also look at where the pin best fits in the tartan scheme -- centered in a color block, aligned vertically between two stripes, etc. Get it in that vicinity then adjust so the pin looks its best against the colors of the tartan.

I prefer to wear it on the fold of the hem, for that added fabric to hold it. Maybe not traditional, but I feel it's safer that way.

Black Watch- without even thinking much about it I had put it on the line between the two green stripes seemed right in that spot.
