I also have a USAK in PV. There's no direct comparison between them... I love them, and I love my SWKs, but they're very different kilts. The PV is closer to actual wool in texture and weight, but the acrylic is nice, and comfortable.

    I fixed your title.

To add my two cents, I currently have two Stillwater Standards (Royal Stewart and Black Stewart) and three Heavyweights (Solid Green, Solid Black, and weathered Lamont variant) and I will vouch for the quality of Jerry's kilts. The pleats lack the cutouts of traditional kilts (aqdding slight bulk to the waist), but other than that they are a good value.

Note that they have a 24" standard drop and may need to be hemmed.

    Cheers

I have an SWK Thrifty. It is well made, and their service is very good.

OTOH, the acryllic fabric does 'pill' and it snags when the cats try to climb up. It is also excessively hot in Maryland summer heat and humidity, but of course warm in winter. Goes well with an acryllic sweater.

The Thrifty has less yardage and fewer pleats than a formal kilt, i.e. it is a casual kilt. It also has velcro, which makes it still less formal looking than some other casual kilts. Obviously, then, it isn't intended for formal occasions.

They also offer Standard kilts, which look more formal but are the same material, and Heavyweight kilts, which AFAIK are the cheapest wool kilts you will find anywhere, but which should be indiscernible to 99% of people from the most expensive kilts. Obviously, the users of this board are not in that 99%, but don't let that worry you.

Probably an SWK Standard would be fine for a formal event if it is new, or if the excess pile is removed (see thread on shaving a kilt, LOL!).

I have two Stillwater "heavyweight" wool kilts and like them very much. An excellent value for the money. I also have a Stillwater Thrifty acrylic kilt which I bought for St. Patrick's Day because at $30, I didn't care if someone spilled beer (or worse) on it. Surprisingly I got a lot of compliments on it.

An SWK heavyweight solid green is in my stars, but fortunately, for the time being, my size isn't available .

    Greetings fellow Utahn,
Just ordered my SWK today, saw a fellow at our church Highlander games last week and must say I was so impressed with his, it confirmed my order today. They're verrry nice quality, you would not be sorry ordering one youself.

You won't be disapointed. I just got back from a 2 mile hike wearing my Black Stewart standard. So comfy...

Not to take away from Stillwater, they are a great company with endless praise. People that love his kilts really love his kilts and Jerry is fantastic at customer service. If you have decided on a SWK than you can't go wrong.

However based on the question of acrylic kilts, if you are a wool kilt fan I would suggest you avoid the acrylic kilts. I am a wool convert (from PV) and have owned an acrylic kilt (not from Stillwater). I wore it one time and than sold it. Some will tell you they are comfortable and warm, but it was not for me. I would suggest that if you are looking for a lower priced kilt in an alternative fabric, than check out some of the companies that deal in Marton Mills polyviscose. It is a far superior material to acrylic and is a good alternative to wool. PV would be the only other material I would buy a kilt in.

You guys aren't kidding with their speed, I ordered near midnight Wed night and got a package from them today, not that I had a complicated order (belt + sporran hanger)
