The government forced me to wear a cover every day and everywhere and I started to hate hats of any sort. I have some wonderful baseball type hats and have been given other great hats but when I look in the mirror I see an stange looking fellow looking back and I would much rather be coverless. But as Mother Nature has caused me to grow through the top of my hair I need to protect myself from the sun and the elements. And now that Sydnie has eased me into the kilted world I will have to do some experimenting to see what makes me look less the fool. Perhaps an old flour sack over my head.

A Tilley is what I usually wear and have done for many years. Wide brim, waterproof and great when sailing. If I'm being a bit dressed up then I have a couple of other wide brim style hats and for very posh times a black Fedora.

Not too sure what a Fedora will look like with a kilt though.

I got my T-3 Tilley hat in 1991 and have worn it very regularly ever since. It has seen countless rough and tumble situations, years of intense sun, sweat and chemical exposure and scores of machine washings. It still looks good. In fact, I think it looks better now than ever. I love that hat. I've never worn it with my kilts, however.

A flat cap and when the weather gets a little worse I have a wool pack hat I like to wear. I like the full brim for the rain and snow.

But I have been looking at getting either a caubeen or a balmoral.

I have always tempered my killing with respect for the game pursued. I see the animal not only as a target but as a living creature with more freedom than I will ever have. I take that life if I can, with regret as well as joy, and with the sure knowledge that nature's ways of fang and claw or exposure and starvation are a far crueler fate than I bestow. - Fred Bear

I recently went through a similar hat crisis, I also settled on a flat cap, so far I have a oilcloth and wool one. I also have a tilley, best darn hat ever made in my humble opinion.
