    collaborative sgian dubh

Here is the first of what I hope to be more collaborative efforts with Rab Gordon. Rab's carved ebony handle and silver ferrule, with my blade and sheath. My assembly work on this one. The blade was part of a wakizashi (shorter Japanese sword) that got a quench crack in the very tip, rendering it unusable as a sword. Rather than just binning the whole works, I made this sgian out of it. Anyway, I thought it was a nice and yet different combination of aesthetics with the Japanese style heat treatment on the blade, and a nice carved ebony Rab Gordon handle. Links because the pictures are big.
    Pic one.

    And with the sheath.

Oh yeah, I almost forgot. If you take the screw out, the pin pushes out, and it is dis-mountable in similar fashion to a sword. Not easy, but it does disassemble.

Nice! Having met rab and seen some of his sgian donts that he brought to Boston with him, he does some great carving. Need to get you out Boston way sometime and we can have a pint and talk shop and stuff.

Instead of being from a broken German blade (as blades in Scotland were made from the remnants of imported German blades) that sgian dubh is from a broken Japanese (style) blade =)

Nice. I like that blade. Will you and Rab be making more than just this one-off?
