The culprits in the wide spread exposure given to this sartorial 'faux pas' are the kilt hire companies who, understandably, find it much more economically viable to offer hose of any colour as long as it's white! Cream hose is acceptable as are any colours that tone in with the jacket or kilt. Diced or tartan hose can also be worn."

Just say no to white kilt hose!

I personally do not like white hose much at all. To me, it pulls the eyes down to them immediately, regardless of the tartan being worn (excluding, of course, loud mcleod and buchanan).

I think the kilt outfit is much more aesthetically pleasing when the hose are colored to match. The whole outfit just seems to work better that way.

    Again, to my eye.

    You guys crack me up.

And just for the record, my mind's eye says black hose and black jacket ar the Ritz; just something about matching them whispers class and smoothly displays the tartan... Not that I would notice.
I tried to ask my inner curmudgeon before posting, but he sprayed me with the garden hose…

Interesting thread. It seems to me that the choice might be determined by the tartan too. Some don't look that great to me under any circumstances let alone with formal attire.
    Cheers, Graham.

Having looked at scores (maybe even hundreds) of pre-WWII photographs of kilted men, I can't recall seeing any of them in the white/creme hose that seem to have proliferated post-war, especially in the 1960's and later.

Since one wouldn't, or at least shouldn't, wear white socks with a tuxedo or dinner jacket the same rules apply to the kilt on formal occasions. Tartan, diced, or black are to be preferred for white tie events. With black tie there is a bit more lee-way, and hose the same colour as the darkest colour or primary colour of the kilt may also be worn.

To me, creme coloured socks always look like white socks that have "yellowed" in the laundry.

I have been to several White Tie Dinner Events in Scotland. I have never seen anyone wearing anything other that Tartan or Diced Hose. On occasion White or cream. Black hose just look like old man knee socks to me. If you wish to wear anything other than White Tie apparel than you are not dressed for the occasion. That is all I have left to say on the subject.

This is a photo of myself and my good lady at the 2007 Navy Ball Okinawa. Also below is a link to an excellent, well-researched site on Black/White Tie which you should find a useful resource.

Well, I like my tantan and diced hose. I even wear my diced hose for day wear and piping sometimes.
