Go for the kilt! The fly plaid is for dressing up kilts, it's very optional, and I've never heard of it worn with anything other than a kilt or trews.

I agree! Inexpensive kilts can be had if the cost is an issue. Look around on the boards, there are plenty of outstanding vendors who can help.

Tartan trews
You could go with tartan trousers, that always look sharp.
If not a kilt or tartan trews, you could try a tartan in your tuxedo tie and cumberbund and the ladies could wear a sash in the tartan to accent?
You can even buy the patterns by "burda" #3403 that has bowties, ties, vests, cumberbunds and get the items made by someone that can do the work? It would go with the tux.
Hope that helps?

This is a great idea and it worked for my wedding. Neither of the fathers were willing to wear a kilt, so my mother ordered a bit of tartan fabric to match the kilts and made tartan bow ties and cummerbunds for the fathers. They were a hit and still matched the groomsmen and me.

Don't wear a fly plaid without a kilt. If you insist on a regular tux, you might consider a tartan bowtie and cummerbund. Several vendors offer them.
