In answer to your question, I believe the painting is accurate down to just about the last detail. There are a number of reenactors here who will undoubtedly call me to task if I am in error.
I have agitated in the past for a strictly "HISTORICAL" forum for reenactors, etc. and I think this sort of reinforces that argument. You might want to re-post your question on the "General Kilt Talk" forum and see if you get more informed answers than mine.
