Thanks for the suggestion. I'll definitely do that.

One of my kilts is an inexpensive acrylic. It's a good kilt for around the house. It might be ok for your purposes. Personally, I don't think that I will buy another acrylic. For everyday wear, I would go with a contemporary or PV. Like billmcc, I like the PV used by USA Kilts. The Marton Mills PV has a Teflon coating and resists pilling, a major issue with acrylic. You can get your pockets with Sport Kilt. I'm very satisfied with the Sport Kilt that I own.

I have a casual kilt from The Scotland Kilt Company. It's 16 oz PV, so has the look and weight of a trad kilt. They limited (but nice-looking) tartans in this category, but they're about 50$, with free shipping. Several waist sizes, but standard length of 24". If that fits you, great Can't say I remember the actual manufacturer's name, though. Maybe I have the tag at home still.

The fabric is pretty stiff, but that could just be that I haven't "broken it in". It certainly doesn't feel like wool, but I haven't found it to have an unpleasant touch. Seems to be pretty tough, too. I wouldn't be afraid of using it in the yard, esp at that price.

Oh, and re: Sport Kilt. Really comfortable kilt for hangin' out. But not sure I'd be doing much labour in it. Very lightweight, and I'm not sure how durable the fabric would be. It's definitely easy on / easy off with its velcro waist, though.

In the time since then it has been washed quite a few times and it still looks great

    Cheers

Thanks, Jamie... I'm definitely leaning this way for my next kilt. I think it will do for some of the casual functions, but still looks good enough to use for my work. After that, I think I'll try a full casual-non-trad choice.

Rocky now requires you to mail him a SASE for a swatch. I don't blame him.

Yep, I emailed him a while back and he got right back to me (although I later realized that he was "on vacation"... that's service!) and he did ask for a SASE... no problem with that.
