I own mostly contemporary kilts, and I wear 1.75 inch belts with my Amerikilts mainly because I don't want to buy belts that I can't also use with my pants. Belts wider than 1.75 inch are also impossible to find in Singapore.

The question I originally asked was prompted by the fact that I thought the belt loops on the kilt were for the kilt belt and it felt uncomfortable wearing such a wide belt. I have since been "educated" by reading other posts on this forum and the issue is no longer an issue for me since I have learned the loops are more for your sporran chain. As to not wearing a belt, that isn't a good option. I need one to use my sporran hangers with. The chain belt that came with the sporran is about 1 inch too small.
