Its been observed by some that chains abrade the wool over time (hence Panache's concerns about deburring) and thus many have gone to leather belts/straps for everyday wear, and save the chains for the less frequent dress-up occasions that call for an evening sporran.

    I wondered about using motorcycle braided wire as a sporran strap, although wear may be problem. Plain would be good but you can even get colours:

    I would advise against it, having used it in the past on the motorcycle, to my mind anyway it would tear up the wool of you kilt, the wee pieces fray very easily and could cause lots of problems.
