Lots of people tend to make the belt go trough them. The main reason I find to use them is to prevent the belt from sliding up when dancing at a ceilidh or similar. Personally I only use them for the sporran chain, but even the sporran holds itself up without the loops. I can't see any other reason that someone wanted to try this some time, and others tought it was a good idea.

Can't find any really good reason they should be there.

I quit wearing belts with my kilts a long time ago. Straps hold them up just fine. Often don't wear a sporran either, but when I do, I run the sporran strap through the loops on the back.

It was always my understanding that the loops were a fairly modern aberation intended to keep the sporran straps in place.

Personally, I never use the loops, and the next time I have a kilt made (which will be very soon since I still have about 10 yards of some very nice wool I bought last winter), I think I'll have them ommitted. Thanks to JockScot again for that idea.

I'll use my belt loops. My nice kilt doesn't have them, but my casual ones do. They are good for keeping the (decorative only) belt in place. Since the belt doesn't do anything functional, I don't wear it snug, so the loops help to keep it from riding up.
