Alan, it's not so much whether or not I can figure this out, it's whether I'll come out with something approximating a kilt when I'm done figuring it out.

Not sure if my usual german lager's going to work for this. I might need to go get myself some scottish ale...

What Alan is refusing to tell you is that you have the Velcro strip sitting beneath the underapron pleat. That "hides" it from its mating piece of Velcro. Look again at the photo of my finished kilt and you'll see the Velcro sitting on top of the pleat. Other than that detail, it looks as if you are doing fine!

Sydnie - Oh, ok! I missed that you had the under-apron pleat tacked or ironed down to the point where I didn't even see it. I think I understand what I need to do now -- thanks! Update after I get to sit down and sew for a while ... trying to cook for the rest of the week right now, because I'm going to be ten kinds of busy.

Yes, you will. I have no doubt that you will have made a perfectly wearable kilt! It's looking good so far. You just have to figure out how to attach the over-apron strip so that the under-apron pleat doesn't lie on top of it and block the velcro.
ed::: ahh, sydnie gave it away!

I've made more than a dozen hiking kilts, starting with a series of X-kilts. I can tell you that no two are built exactly the same way. I'm still tinkering and figuring things out.

    SpecialK,
I think that what you have so far looks great. You will have yourself a very fine X-Kilt in no time! The instructions for what to do with the Velcro are a little confusing. As Alan said, you need to figure it out. Perhaps another picture will help?

    Here is how I did Farlander's X-Kilt #2:

Note that I have an extra pleat in the over apron, but do not let that bother you.

Hey SpecialK - I think I know you! Are you (or were you) in the US Army? You look (and act and "sound") just like someone I worked with once at Fort Hunter-Liggett teaching a course.

Welcome from Eastern Washington. It does look like you're doing a pretty good job. I suggest put the kilt on and decide who you think it should go. Sometimes, words are more difficult to understand than they need to be.
