Not so pleasent....kilted!

My family and I went to point pleasent NJ. for a short vacation. I enjoyed the shore, and the area, untill wearing my kilt on the boardwalk. The rude attitude from people was worse than I had ever seen before. Just having my sporran on caused people to freak out! Next year I will get a few photos and post an update on that "project'.

Like good response or bad?
Most of the Goth and Punk kids all think my kilts are Cool and the Cowboys just tell me it takes a lot of Ba*** to wear a kilt. Then we talk about where their ancestors are from like Poland or South America.

Point Pleasant is like my second home, my mom has a house there just off the beach. I can imagine your trip to the boardwalk was quite umpleasant. That is like Valhalla for the youth and mainstream of much of New Jersey and some of New York. It wouldn't even surprise me to know you were followed around and taunted. That is not one of those places to wear a kilt. Especially when most are scantily clad as it is.

Now you could have gone to Belmar and gotten a completely different response. There is a fantastic restaurant there right on the river, you would have been a hit.

As a life-long NJ shore resident (just a few miles north up the coast from Point Beach), I can say with absolute certainty that there is a good reason why Jersians have a reputation for being uncouth troglodytes (feel free to draw your own conclusions). This is particularly true of the big beach resorts (Belmar, Point, Seaside, etc.). My apologies for the rube-like behavior of my fellow Jersians.

I don't think that it is as much the Jersey folk as it is the New yorkers, that do the boardwalk on the weekends, and a lot of kids, I mean a lot! I don't have to tell you! During the summer that boardwak is mostly teens and twentie somethings. The reasonable crowd shows up in September. Sept. is the best time to be there as well!

I lived in Belmar from 1965 until 1998. Then moved to the Red Bank area. Are you thinking of Klein's or Havens & Hamptons? The two great places to eat in Belmar are no longer there. That would be Evelyn's and right across the street was Zelbe's (best fried clams on earth!).

Well, Jersey, on the whole, isn't what it used to be and there are a lot of socio-economic and political reasons for that. Bottom line is the cost of living keeps going up while the quality of life keeps sinking. You can have it!

Oh thank god, yes, Klein's!! I was there last year, had the lobster bisque and that is about all i could eat. You have to be careful what you order there, because you can end up with way more than you can eat. My folks would know Evelyn's and Zelbe's I am sure. We used to live right off Ocean Ave, about a mile down from that infamous boardwalk. Didn't get up this year, hate it, I go through withdrawal pains. There's a great little coffe shop on the main street in Belmar that does the best breakfast burrito, the owner is awesome! We used to get our fish and stuff from Spike's or the Co-op, you wouldn't recognize the place now. I guess some things gotta change.


I know my mother is extremely pissed off about the Pt. city comissioners! My great-grandfather built one of the first houses there in that area. You should see what they have done almost in the backyard! Still and all, that place will always be home!
