After the dinner and awards wrapped up, I asked one of the host/organizers that we are aquainted with about the way they word the invites. They do not actually list a dress code, but use the terms "formal" and "black tie event" in the body of the invitation. If folks ask, they tell them "black tie optional", which just means wear whatever! She was concerned that "people might not come" if it was black tie required and they were too rigid etc...

I go to a big formal Marti Gras ball every year that is black tie required, they actually tell you in the invite that you will be turned away if not in formalwear, and they include a discount coupon to a local tux rental place with the invitations. And seeing everyone dressed up like that really gives the party a sense of occasion.
I suggested to our host that in the spirit of elevating the event next year, they try listing "black tie preferred" as the dress code on the invites, and see about getting some formalwear discount coupons to put with them.

Keep it up Zardoz. You and your good lady look great. I can look as casual as the next bloke, kilted or otherwise but there are times when casual or lounge suit just will not do... How many were wearing white shoes? Never trust a man who wears white shoes, unless he's carrying a cricket bat.
