I have a pocket watch my grandfather gave me when I was 3. It still works. I have other, better watches from both of my grandfathers, including a nice gold one that my maternal grandfather received from his grandmother when he turned 18 -- for a perfect record of church attendance, and for not smoking or drinking. (He later had an immense collection of briar pipes, which he used with much enjoyment...)

My wife brought me a nice Swiss watch back from a teaching year in Europe, and I purchased one for myself to celebrate the completion of my doctorate.

I started wearing them regularly about three years ago, after I fell down the mountain above our house and gashed up my left wrist during the self-arrest. I'm long since healed up and can wear a wristwatch again, but I find I like the little rituals that go with a pocket watch.

One of my watches has a braided leather "chain", and the two most recent ones have chains but they're quite plain. I guess I'll have to keep my eyes open for vintage chains, now! Very, very cool -- thanks for showing them.

I just happened on this thread.

I think Nick, our Kilted Blacksmith, would agree with me that there is no one "right" way to wear a pocket watch.

If the waistcoat I'm wearing happens to have four pockets I just prefer having the pocket watch in one of the upper pockets.

    That is just me.

One's Pocket watch, chain, fob (or lack thereof), and the way they are all worn offer a wonderful opportunity to display one's individuality.

I'm just glad this wonderful tradition is still alive and strong here on XMTS

    Cheers

Some beautiful chains here. Jamie's right, there's no 'correct' way to wear a chain, I have my preferences but I know others who like to wear them differently. I usually wear my watch in the lower pockets, but I wear it in the upper when wearing a tweed waistcoat (no reason, just like to). I also have a short leather strap which is used in the lapel buttonhole to keep the watch in the jacket breast pocket.

Here's one of my ancestors with his watch up top:

Here's me. I made the watch chain, it's my usual when wearing a waistcoat.

    Hello All!

Sorry I haven't posted in awhile.

I have had a long love affair with pocket watches and with few exceptions have never been without one. When my sight went I resigned myself to having to live with a loud talking wristwatch. I decided one day that I would move to a braille watch and thought I'd end up with a wristwatch. My VR counselor wonderful lady that she is actually found a Braille pocket watch for me! Now I tell the time with style and eloquence that only a pocket watch affords. Among the several pocket watches I own the Braille watch and the gold pocket watch that my wife gave me for our 25th wedding anniversary twelve years ago are my most cherished.

To keep this kilt related: When one is not wearing a waistcoat where does the watch go? I wear mine int the shirt pocket with the chain running to a button hole that is slightly above the top of the pocket. This works well for me. I'd like to hear from you guys on how you wear without the waistcoat.

My chains are all plain and vary in length some being about half the length of standard.

    Slainte'
    Bill

I have a belt hook on my most often-used chain. With a kilt, I drop the watch into the right pocket and don't put anything else in there. With my UK Workman, I put the watch in an outer pocket, where I can pull it out easily.
