Until we see pictures it is hard to make a judgement of whether they might look good short.
However, since the laces are pretty standard laces you can go to a shoe store and get longer brown laces (look for boot laces), then just remove and replace the tassels from your short laces to the longer ones and you should be fine. They are usually only held on with a single knot on the lace.
The only place I have seen selling brown ghillies is Heritage of Scotland, a Gold Brothers store. I have a pair from them that are fine for casual wear and have the long laces. If you cannot find them anywhere else I would assume that they would carry replacements there.
