I like them, especially the tweeds. I have a saffron kilt and a Hodden Grey one (London Scottish as shown above) they tend to go with a variety of clothes more than some of the tartans around which are too garish for my jaundiced eye, I guess it's a case of less is more. That said I like to see them worn in more of a traditional manner. I think that the original tartans were far more subdued and tweed like, or having a simple sett - suited for camouflage in the heather and the only realistic patterns that could be woven on the type of loom available back in the day with wool dyed with the local flora.
I draw the line at black kilts and the pinstripe ones though, and the two sophisticates shown wearing flat caps with a headless mutt look like they've just rolled out their beds. If you're going to wear a kilt then make a wee bit of an effort....

I think the Saffron and the Tweed/Tweed tartans look cool. They're plain and they fit with a lot of jackets and accessories.

I have a green kilt and a saffron one, for obvious reasons, and a black one for no reason atall! I like both solid and tartan kilts equally. The quandary is that solid is more traditional if you're Irish, but also more apt to garner 'skirt' comments!

I agree that the solid kilt is less recognizable as a kilt than one in tartan, which makes accessories like a sporran more important. IMHO the following examples of solid kilt outfits don't work too well without the sporran:

- An t'arm breac dearg

Pinstripes, I agree with! Completely! And the bit about making an effort... Well, I see that being the case no matter how you dress- a little dignity goes a long way.

In courious about your feelings about pinstripes here. Is it just strong obvious patterns or is the feeling any pinstripe kilt is a no?
Just asking beacuse Im jonesing for a TFCK kilt suit which has a subtle pinstripe pattern. Not that im goin to change my mind about it but I would like to judge the opinions and reasoning behind them.

Personally Jordan I feel it's a bit too novelty like and a kilt outfit trying to like a suit (or a pinstripe suit made to look more Celtic?! ) doesn't ring true for me. Like I mentioned before I like the kilt to be a little more traditional in style and fabric. Not to say they don't look well-cut, or smart, it just ain't me pal.

I think the pinstripe kilt suit looks good in a hip and cool sort of way. That being said, I don't think I would wear one, preferring my non-kilted charcoal pinstripe suit instead. Jordan, I believe you position yourself as more on the modern, non-traditional side of things, so the pinstripe kilt suit would probably work nicely for you. If you get one, make sure to post pics!

It’s interesting to see the opinions here regarding pinstripes.

CMcG I would say that depending on my mood I swing between traditional and very modern. Most of the time I prefer my tartan kilts to my UK's etc but I think that because of how they are made as opposed to the pattern (tartan or even solid colours). That said April the 17th is circled in my calendar and I will of course be posting photos as soon as

I have three solids: two UKs (black & OD) and a saffron. As I wear all my kilts mostly casual, there isn't much difference for me. Maybe on St. Pat's I'll get a pic of self in the saffron...
One day I'll own a tweed (or several)!
