Why is a cravat wrong with a kilt? Or is it?
You know when you instinctively know something is 'wrong' - well that's how I feel about wearing a cravat with a kilt but I'm not sure why.
Leaving aside the caveats about there not being any rules only conventions... I can't think of any particular reason that a cravat should not be considered as conventional with a kilt except that my gut says no.

And he leaves them all about,
Until up comes the Regiment and kicks the 'Eathen out.

Nothing wrong with that at all. I sometimes wear a cravat in an informal way(pullover and open necked shirt) with the kilt and I have no problem with that at all. I have also "got away with" with a hunting stock(with a Sherrifmuir jacket) on a formal evening occasion when I had forgotten the proper tie, not one person noticed! I would happily do so again. The Jabot must have started out life as a cravat rather than the more up to date fixings of today.

The reason I'm mentioning it is that my neck (and face) got a little burnt at the Moira Country Fair on Sunday last and I'm planning to go to the Cornhill Games near Banff on Saturday and was thinking that a cravat may protect the neck - sunscreen on the visog, but I hate the feeling of sunscreen on bits that rub on clothes - neck/collar, wrist/cuffs, knees/kilt edge etc.
Of course I could always wear a wide brimmed hat but they don't look quite right with a kilt. Perhaps I'll go with the Pith helmet. ith:

Oh crumbs, I am so sorry to hear of your injuries. In your circumstance, to the devil with convention , just wear what is comfortable.

I don't have any photos, but you might also try a simple bandana tied around your neck-- very casual, and highly protective. I usually wear a bandana and a panama hat when I visit the Monterrey Historic Races in August.

Whew...something struck me as unusual about how you asked what you did, so I poked around the web and learned the difference between a 'cravat' and a 'ruche tie', and a bit of history in general about decorative things we tie about our necks.
Anyway...I'm sure as with everything else, tastefully done, nobody will care and you'll be comfortable.
I don't like sunscreen when it's next to clothes either...feels weird. I do throw a bandanna on for boarding, biking, sometimes hiking, etc. to protect from the elements...although usually in conjunction with staying warm. YMMV, but you'll certainly avoid sunburn. The cravat would look sharper, in my humble and inexperienced opinion, if you're dressing up.

'Injury' would is stretching it too far - not even mild discomfort - just peeling and a bit itchy - I just don't want to add to it.
I've packed a jungle hat, a leather Crocodile Dundee hat as well as my Caubeen/ToS (depends if I put a turee on it or not) and I may take the Pith. I've packed the cravat as well but with a brim it would not be necessary.
I was just curious to see if others shared my gut feeling that the cravat is 'wrong' and if anyone could say why.

I can’t see why you could manage a cravat as long as its coloured like you would if you were wearing a tie not hot pink etc
I’m presuming that you’re going for a daywear style for Saturday so you shouldn’t stand out amongst the kilted gentlemen I have seen round here for games etc.

I don't have a 'hot pink' tie although I'm looking for a knitted silk 'un to go with my grey suit with pink pin stripes. Plenty of pink shirts which I sometimes wear with the Hodden Grey. But if I do wear a cravat it'll be green with white spots.
Are you going to the Cornhill Games? I think its going to be a pretty small affair but might be fun.

Aye that what I was meaning, something which will go with the rest of what you’ll be wearing. I would think it to be very small seeing as I only live about 20 min away and your post was the first I’ve heard of it. I think I will come and have a look I can’t think of anything else I’m supposed to be doing on Saturday
