Whew...something struck me as unusual about how you asked what you did, so I poked around the web and learned the difference between a 'cravat' and a 'ruche tie', and a bit of history in general about decorative things we tie about our necks.

Anyway...I'm sure as with everything else, tastefully done, nobody will care and you'll be comfortable.

I don't like sunscreen when it's next to clothes either...feels weird. I do throw a bandanna on for boarding, biking, sometimes hiking, etc. to protect from the elements...although usually in conjunction with staying warm. YMMV, but you'll certainly avoid sunburn. The cravat would look sharper, in my humble and inexperienced opinion, if you're dressing up.
