I want to weigh in with a big YES on a linen kilt jacket. Your excuse for dressing differently from the Groom is that you are 1) older and less able to carry off the Jacobite shirt and 2) You don't want to intrude on his territory as the Guy in the Kilt Shirt. Never mind that you might or might not want to wear one some other time.
Poke around and try to find a dark blue linen jacket. Maybe something like this:

I have no idea what your tight budget is, but I know that the Father of the Bride has plenty of financial demands, so I am not urging you to go crazy. If you find a slightly informal looking jacket, it may have patch pockets, which is a very good thing. It doesn't really have to be navy- it could be forest green or sand colored. Whatever you can find, print out the thread on converting a jacket and see about doing that with your linen coat. If your coat is lightweight enough, you can even omit the vent in the back. Consider some low key ( and low cost) bone colored buttons. You can put silver square ones on later if you decide you really like the jacket.
Otherwise, I believe you have received enough consistent advice above to decide for yourself what to do. The kilt will be cool ( a breeze will find its way to you) and by all means, wear a cotton shirt and a cotton undershirt. Remember, your precious child thinks enough of your marriage to try it out for herself. Good Luck.

Many thanks for all the advice....
I read, I listened, I made the best choice for me... unfortunately, there was a last minute unannounced change in the groom and best mans attire that left me sorely under dressed. They both wore PC's for the ceremony and changed to t-shirts for the reception. I don't care, I was comfortable and my daughter was happy. In the end, that's all that mattered.
Black Watch tartan, lovat green hose with simple snake garter ties, long sleeve white dress shirt. Left the sgian dubh at home due to local concealed weapon ordinances.
If I can find some better pics, I will post them; but these will have to do for now.

My sentiments exactly.
It is to my great regret that I will be wearing trousers, not a kilt, for my daughter’s wedding in December. The wife and I went shopping in March and bought a suit in charcoal for my son’s wedding – my first suit purchase in more than 30 years.
Now I plan to have the jacket cut down so that I can wear it with a kilt – but I will have to wait until after December.
Regards,
Mike
