If you are looking for a jacket that could do both day and evening, you would probably be better served by black barathea than tweed. A black Argyll is generally considered to be the most versatile kilt jacket.
As for the vest, why not get it as a set with the jacket? I think that's one area of Highland dress where matching is perfectly appropriate
