There are also the knitted tams sold by some vendors, which are are quite different from the military TOS's:

Also the 18th century type hand-knitted "broad bonnet":

Well I do not have good photos of all the different styles, but here's a couple;

This is a nice Tam O Shanter from J.Byous. about 10.5 inches in diameter measured across the top. Tams are usually "soft", without any rosette, like a beret with wide band and big toorie, but I have a stiffener in this one that supports a badge and stands it up a bit like a Caubeen.

Here is a "cheapest one I could find" brand plain Balmoral, about 9 inches in diameter across the top, with the typical rosette, small red toorie, and ribbon tails, in this case being worn as part of a outfit once a year for a Victorian festival.
Bonnet and hat threads traditionally eventually go off the rails, I really don't care to contribute to another, so I'll just say that I'm not of the school that says there are only two hats you may wear with the kilt, and one is only for pipers.

I say! I particularly like the green sash and tiara on "Tammy."

Oh. Yer talkin' about the HAT, eh? I see it now. Carry on, then...
I have an ancient tam o'shanter that may in fact qualify now as a modern balmoral by size, except that it does not have the balmoral's bow on the back.
