Hats?

Just a quick question regarding hats. I have a favorite hat that I generally wear in the winter when it cools down enough to warrant it. It is, I believe, a style of flat cap, and while made of wool, was manufactured here in the US. It has a half dozen or so panels of different material, tweed I believe, and has always fit me well. I just didn't know if the various patterns of the tweed panels would clash with the pattern of a tartan.

So my question is, is it OK to where the tweed hat with a tartan, or should I look at getting another hat in the same style, but in a solid color fabric, or something that might more closely match, or compliment the tartan?

Here's a pic so you can see what I mean. This is me just before heading out to my second kilted outing. I got some strange looks to start, and a few of the guys looked askance at the kilt, but once the beer started flowing, and the cigars were lit, everything was smooth sailing

Just got back from the Waxhaw (NC) games. I have to admit I saw all sorts of head gear worn with the kilt.

My own personal preference is to wear something more traditional, Blamoral, Tam, and the like with the kilt. The flat cap in tweed, is for my taste, borderline, but still OK. I would draw the line at a Fedora, Trilby or Bowler however.
Exceptions would be a Panama or Pith for days when the sun is really bright, the weather hot, and the way I sunburn makes it almost a necessity.

It might be a newsboy cap. Tweed can work alright with a tartan kilt if the colors go. I have worn a tweed flat cap or driving cap.

Just remember that wearing a flat cap with a kilt is an American style, and is never ever done in Scotland.

That's not really a flatcap, it's a news boy cap. Different construction and look, even if they're more closely related than a bowler to a baseball cap. I like the 8-panel newsie, I've been on the lookout for one.

Yep, it's a newsboy. And, I've been looking for one too Nick. Someone posted a link to this site a while back. I emailed with a question and didn't receive a reply. So, I've not ordered from them... I may email again, as they have just what I'm looking for.

I think a solid color would look better, but it's hard to tell from the photo because it's kind of overexposed around your head.

When I wear a flatcap (I have several, all in solid colors) I almost always wear it backwards, "Samuel Jackson" style. I don't own a news boy cap so I'm not sure how it would look backwards.

The tweed plays!

I have flat caps in brown and charcoal tweed that I wear with my kilts and I believe this works well.

First off, I think you, and the others, are correct, I think it's a newsboy cap. I just couldn't think of that when I made my original post, all I could think of was paperboy, and I knew that wasn't right

I also had no idea that the style of hat, newsboy or flatcap, wouldn't be worn with a kilt in Scotland. Why is that? Is the Glengarry or Balmoral so much more popular that you just wouldn't see it, or is there some prejudice against the flatcap, or what?

I really love my newsboy, and have just about worn it out. It was a gift from friend of the family years and years ago, so I guess I'll have to go on a hunt to find a replacement. I'll also have to look and see if I can find it in different patterns or colors or solids.

PS - just checked, and it is an eight panel Newsboy from the "Stanley-Evans Custom Collection", or so sayeth the label

It's made in the US and has a brown liner which could be silk or polyester made to look liek silk, that has the trademarked name "Pendleton" embroidered in it in several places.
