Ties
I typically wear my kilts casually, but I have an occasion coming up where a shirt and tie would be appropriate. I am thinking of wearing a simple solid color necktie that matches/complements a dominant color in the tartan.
Does anyone have experience with this? Looking farther down the road, how about x-mas ties?
Thanks in advance,
Mikilt

Consider a tie with a small print or a striped repp tie. Don't be too concerned with matching. In terms of XMarks ties, see below:

Actually, I like to bring out a color that is a MINOR element in the tartan, like the red tie and the red stripe in my Leatherneck kilt.

Like David, I also like the look of striped ties with kilts. Solid also is a good choice, though. I own and wear both kinds.
I find that these days solid color ties are getting harder to find in a lot of menswear stores, especially in good colors that might compliment your kilt.
We sell solid lambswool ties made by Lochcarron, in colors specifically chosen to compliment most tartans. See:

Good suggestion Matt, Lochcarron do indeed make some super solid coloured ties.

Just dress like David Pope, and you'll always look good.
I like the look of solid ties as well. Here's a photo of me in a solid color tie for an evening out. Rather than go for the contrasting color, I wore a black tie with a gray jacket, kind of a muted overall look.

Ain't that the truth! I have had a really hard time finding solid-colored ties locally. Thank goodness for the internet.
Personally, I like the idea of a solid-colored tie that serves as a bit of a splash of color, especially if it complements a color in your tartan (ideally not the dominant color), and especially if it coordinates with your flashes/garters. You don't have to get all "matchy-matchy" with it, but it can look really sharp when small areas of color are all coordinated together.
Since others are posting pics, I'll throw one in there too. Ignore, for a moment, the somewhat controversial wearing of Argyll hose and horsehair sporran for daywear, and concentrate on the visual effect of the red. I'm wearing red garter ties and a solid red necktie that complement the thin red stripe in my tartan. I like how the small areas of red above and below the kilt are pulled together by the red in the kilt. Maybe your tartan has a minor color that you could use to the same effect?

I also think Solid Ties look great with kilts. I am going to go SLIGHTLY against the grain and say I'm not PERSONALLY fond of striped ties with kilts, but they can work with the right outfit. Solid color ties work very easily with any dress kilt outfit, so long as they are the same as 1 of the colors in the kilt. We carry Lochcarron's selection of Solid Ties as well:

I like to wear striped neckties with my Highland daywear, as well as neckties from Barbour featuring assorted patterns with pheasants and mallards-looks quite smart with a tattersall shirt and a tweed jacket and waistcoat!
