Roasting Nuts in Winter

Anyone else like roasting unshelled nuts on winter evenings?

* by "unshelled" I mean they have not been shelled yet, or they are still in their shells. *
Walnuts, hazelnuts (filberts), Brazil nuts, chestnuts, almonds, pecans, pine nuts or pinyons, and peanuts; assorted seeds etc.

I don't have an open fire, just an old oven, but it keeps the kitchen warm.

Yes, I know peanuts are not really nuts...

Me, I just don't stand so close to the fire...

Usually when I roast nuts or spices I do it in a cast iron skillet, either in the
oven or stove top...can do it on the wood stove with a dutch oven...but it's iffy.

I did do our Christmas country ham on the wood stove in a DO...was good!

Had to add a note about the shells.

I just put the nuts, which are in their shells, on a metal tray in the oven. It's a gas oven, so there is a flame involved.

The larger nuts can be placed on the shelf rack. I usually have the oven turned to a low temperature, and they can sit there for hours.

A fine afternoon. Stop at a chestnut roaster in Davos, buy a bag scooped from his brazier and beg a second little bag with a cuff for the shells. Then, bundled up and arm and arm, stroll widdershins around the lake nibbling the spoils and being nibbled back by the cold, cold air. In step with gentle talk, chuckles, good memories. One stop for the warm fire and rich red wine of the half-way inn. January life can be better?

Just keeping the kitchen and that side of the bungalow from getting too cold. Might as well cook things, too.
