I have recently become aware of a phenomenon called the "Dunning-Krueger Effect." Essentially psychologists have experimentally determined that people who are largely ignorant of an issue are more confident of their opinions than those who are well informed.

Ignorance breeds confidence!

I have received the comment "if you not a piper you should not be wearing a kilt" from a server at a restaurant I frequent. I never got the chance to make a response because I got an immediate favorable response from another server that liked the kilt. I go there now when the anti-kilt server is working just to bug her. She never says a word to me anymore.

If it is a decent restaurant for a kilt night, you should talk to the manager, and arange for her to work a certain weekend in May...

That's where it went wrong. 42 was the answer to six times seven. I think the question was supposed to be six times nine, or something like that.

I always tell the inquiring minds that I wear what's comfortable under my kilt. Had one person tell me that it wasn't saint patty's day, and I wasn't Scottish...they quickly backed off when I started speaking Gaelic to them....nothing fancy, just asked her what her name was in Gaelic....

About two years ago, I went to work in my Scotland Rugby shirt--blue w/ white trim, thistle emblem, etc. Middle-aged woman in the office asked me why I had it on since I wasn't "Scotch." (Oy!)
I told her my father was born in Aberdeen...she said she didn't know I was from Maryland. Sigh.

And to stay on topic, the OP asked "why people do this..."
When confronted with something new, most of the uninformed still feel they just HAVE to say something.
