Spartan Tartan.
No you don't have to wear the kilt to a Scots wedding. Many do, many don't. No one would dare specify which tartan to wear!We wear the one we have and the splash of assorted colours of different tartans in ever changing combinations is a wonder to behold and is better, by far, than anything a "wedding organiser" can come up with!

I would do as asked if kilt or trousers were preferred. I would feel highly insulted and refuse to attend if the tartan were specified. That is my lineage being put down, and may just cause me to order a broadsword...

I can tell I'm over the hill...I'm agreeing with the traditionalists!
I'd venture to say that matching the rest of the party's ties with you kilt is all that is required to indicate you belong to that group. In fact, it's the other way round isn't it? You are wearing the kilt, and they are matching your kilt with their ties. I'd second MOR's comments verbatim.
Well, actually, perhaps I'm finding the traditionalists' arguments over the prior months compelling. Scary that, perhaps I need to get out more!

I sort of thought that might be the type of response! Glad to hear it. I would LOVE to see all the variety of tartans.

You wouldn't change all your names to be the same, so why change your tartans!

With apologies to the OP for going a wee bit astray on this thread, but I think it is still relevant.
We went to a very small Highland wedding not so long ago and not surprisingly there were a large proportion of family tartans about. Even so, whilst the tartan undoubtedly was of the same clan, the various versions and shades of colours are numerous and it must be remembered that these kilts have not just come from the shop(unlike many abroad understandably probably do) and the wear and tear of 40/60/100 years of use has also added to a particular hue.
That would confound those wedding organiser types, what? Them demanding "Clan MacCarrot" tartans MUST be worn--------they will still not get the same colours!Bl..... GREAT!
I think that over the years I must have seen the same kilts being worn by several different people and the"taking ins", "lettings out" and reversing the aprons have and do add to the colour scheme of the event too.
In passing, I saw a kilt that I had not seen for oh, probably 30 years and was being proudly worn at the wedding by a young man who was stunned that I recognised it! The last time I saw it was on the farm here by the only chap I have ever seen regularly wear the kilt for farm work. How did I know it? It is a Seaforth Highlanders kilt worn in the trenches of WW1, with three well mended bullet holes in it. Yes indeed, our kilts are expected to last!

Look around for Pour1Malt's wedding photos, among others...

Dale I think you looked just great. I hope to do half as well. I am late joining this thread, I did not recognize the acronym "FotG". However, I now realize I am one. In May my eldest son is getting married in the Hunting Thomson Tank that his mother and I bought him for the occasion. Fortunately my future daughter in law is not of the Bridezilla variety and everything is pretty relaxed. She is a west coast girl and the ceremony will be on the beach of her Vancouver Island home town.
I will also wear my Hunting Thomson kilt and my younger son, who his brother has asked to be best man will wear the same Dress Thomson kilt I wore at my wedding to the boys mother 30 years ago. It was given to me by my parents for the occasion.
We won't match but I am confident we will look great and enjoy a very happy day.
