I am not yet kilted myself, so take my advice with a grain of salt.

If I were you, I might avoid the red/black diced hose - not because they look bad, but because that's the same hose pattern worn by the Royal Regiment of Scotland with the Government 1A (Black Watch) tartan in their dressier or more formal uniforms. As has been discussed about regimental ties on this forum, there are places where this combination might be viewed as an attempt to look like something you're not. I may be all wet, but that's how it strikes me. If you decide to go that way you can be assured it will look smashing
