Depending on its size, the kilt pin usually needs to come off also.
I do that as well - and I also get asked to remove my boots quite often. But that's fine, security checks at airports are a necessary evil, and there's no point getting in a stew about it. If you prepare properly, the delay is minimal, and if a security guard insists on patting me down, that's a fairly minor inconvenience as well. A security guard once told me a trick for not triggering the metal detector, though; if you twist the kilt so that the buckles are at the front and the back, the alarm won't go off
