clue 3: this city was settled by Captain James Harvey Ferris of Kentucky before 1837

I am just getting round to thinking that I need to sharpen up on my geographical knowledge of America! Super pictures.

Threads like this are a great way to do just that (and for other areas of the world as well)! Like many other places in the US, Utah has been very heavily influenced by Scottish immigrants; in fact, we even have our own Ben Lomond! And I am very proud to say that my third-great grandfather, a native of Scotland, was one of the original directors of the Utah Caledonia Society.

Jock my Dad, who is now gone, helped lay the second Atlantic cable and lived in Southhampton for a few years. He sailed back to New York on an ocean liner and loved to tell the story of the Irish nuns he got to know on board who were being posted to America. They told him after landing in New York they were getting on the train and hoped to be in Seattle by tea time. Yes, easy to scoff but coming from Ireland they had no real concept at how big this country is. I have driven from the east border of Texas to the west border with New Mexico (and that was only part of the drive) and it is about 835 miles. I called friends in the UK from west Texas and they were blown away by the distance.

You know, I've never taken a dip in the Great Salt Lake. I'm not sure why. Of course, I've heard it's more diluted now than it used to be.
After seeing photos of what Saltair I looked like, I have to say Saltair III looks kind of disappointing.
I didn't even know FC Dallas was playing RSL—or that there was a "Rio Tinto Stadium" for that matter—but then, I don't really follow soccer until the World Cup, and Guatemala has always been eliminated by then anyway.
By the way, I was in Edinburgh Castle (the store) a few years back. After asking the clerk about the Utah tartan and being told it was a restricted tartan, he told me there was a RSL tartan in the works, but I haven't heard anything about it since then.

yes the saltair three is disappointing compered to the first, and since this is for the scarf i wont put up pic's. but in the 80's it was on its way to being just as good. it had a water park and stuff attached.
but in i think 83 the lake rose several feet flooding it all out.
the water reseeded, and in....... 87 did it again.
now they just do the occasional concert when they can,
and just wait for the next flood.
as for the RSL tartan. at one point we had a Scottish born striker
DR. Kenny Deuchar( yes he is a certified Med DR) and
Scottish Born Ian Joy, on the roster.
and rsl were trying to get tartans made up,
but i think they only looked at the wool option and bowed out.
Some Fans did get the Lindsay Tartan To wear to support him,
but they got the kilts after the season and he left in the off season.
i dont know what those boys did with them, maybe some still have them LOL
