In the context of the film it was perfectly correct. Firstly Bond was attending a formal meal hosted by a "Baron" and secondly he was supposed to be representing the College of Arms.

You will also notice that he was not wearing a belt (you can see this when he sneaks around after the meal), again perfectly correct as a belt is not worn under a formal jacket.

But that way he cannot be linked with any individual clan and hence, as you say, neutral.
One could make a very convincing arguement for a Maclean tartan, since Bond was based upon Sir Fitzroy Maclean!

    That wouldn't be neutral then

Maybe we should start a campaign for Daniel Craig to wear it in his next Bond movie

I think the very formal attire makes kilting look a little antiquated and out of touch. I must admit it's been several years since I watched OHMSS and I forgot the occasion he wore it to and in this case formal was correct.

Bond(o)san is what he's called in these parts that and "zero zero seven".

The film was made in the late 60s (1969) when I guess most kilts were worn pretty formally anyway even as daywear.

But I would disagree that it's "antiquated and out of touch"

There is still a place for it, it looks very smart indeed on the correct occasions. It's just that people are now discovering the greater versatility of what can be worn with the kilt.

He'd better look good in it: he was a male model. I saw it for the first time on Thanksgiving, and while I loved Bond in a kilt and smoking a pipe, there's obviously a reason he was only Bond once (in this case, you only live once).

It looked to me like he was wearing a Prince Charlie and a vest. He wasn't wearing a Montrose, that's a full double breasted jacket.

I was more entertained by the young lady's reply when he dropped his kilt.

    "It's TRUE!!!" she squealed!

I just wanted to mention, there are 2 movies outside the original James Bond continuity. One (Never Say Never Again) is staring a Scot (Sir Connery), but no kilts that I remember. The other is the "original" 1960s Casino Royale. It has Bond (more than one of them as I remember) and many other characters in kilts. I caught the tail end of it on TV last week, but have never seen the whole thing.

Now that the "reset" Bond continuity has begun with a new Casino Royale (no kilts), I hope the old Casino Royale is/will be on DVD. When I get that, I'll have EVERY Bond movie on DVD (even the 2 bad ones).
