Do they make them in black?
Seriously, it's just hard to go wrong with black.

I wear whatever coat I get my hands on... which is very little, since I have "outgrown" some of them, and the others just aren't warm enough for seriously cold weather. I usually skate by with a t-shirt and sweater.
I would wear a trench with a kilt though. If the weather is that bad, I'll take function over form any day.

The only top-coat I have ever worn with the kilt is an Inverness cape. The most practical one I have for wet weather is in black nylon but, I admit, it is not particularly good at keeping the cold out - tweed is much better for that!

The Inverness cape has the disadvantage of looking rather 'costumey' in my opinion, especially when fully done up, but if the weather allows me to wear it partially open, so that the kilt shows as I walk, I feel much more comfortable about it.

To answer Raphael's question: no I have never owned a trench coat let alone worn one with the kilt and, to be honest, I don't think it would really look quite right. But that's just me!

I have a Harris Tweed overcoat, actually wore it today with my Henderson muffler. But, I've never worn it with a kilt. Not sure if I would. But after reading some other's thoughts on it I may consider it.

For cold, I wear a mid-thigh length car coat that allows about a foot of kilt to be seen. I've never worn a long top coat or rain coat with a kilt - like the other's said, I think it would look odd and I'd be afraid that someone would think I was going to flash them.

This is very similar to what I wear, although mine is black wool: http://aka.landsend.com/is/image/Lan...5_M1_CAM_M.jpg

My Inverness is my standard raincoat; kilted or not. It's immensely practical, and with wide arm holes instead of sleeves, and doesn't build up condensation inside, even in Florida.
Aside from an Inverness being a traditional topcoat for a kilt, my case may be somewhat different; I'm on occasion required to stand out in a cemetery in a street-flooding, monsoon-like downpour in a kilt. I can assure you that with a foot or so of (quite expensive) kilt exposed I'd be even more miserable than normal.

A hint for those in similar situations; get a really cheap EBay polyester kilt, a cheap set of second-hand brogues from a thrift shop, and your oldest hose. At twenty paces in heavy rain, nobody will know or care.
