Good on ya Derek. I don't know if I could have been so accomodating. I have been subjected to various forms of ridicule throughout my life and I generally just smile and carry on. Had I been with you, a good ole fashioned donnybrook may have been in order. Nothing like a night in jail in a foreign country to make a trip memorable!

Well handled, Derek. Your story reminded me of the one I posted last summer about the guy who said I looked like a woman while wearing my knee length shorts. You will always get these sad inadequate people who are insecure and who would delight in getting you agitated but it takes a real man like you or me to dress as we feel comfortable and not be fazed on the rare occasion when our clothing choice is criticised by a stranger.

I have started smiling sweetly at wolf whistles that come my way such as when I went to choir practice in Cwm tonight.
But another reason to smile sweetly is that today I ordered what will be kilt #15 (or cilt #2) - an eight yard dress St David's National tartan which I hope will arrive before St David's Day!

I had a similar experience w/ one guy at a memorial for a friend of mine. The strange part was that about a week later I got a call at home from the same guy with an apology. He said that he was totally inappropriate and he was sincerely apologizing. I had a hard time remembering that anyone had said anything out of line. Apparently, he felt so bad that he had all of his friends one the lookout for me so he could find my number and call me. It's nice to know that some people feel responsible to account for their own actions. O'Neille

Good Job
Derek,
You handled that well, But I grew up in a very rural part of Va. backwater Appomattox, County. My father dressed me up in a kilt/Cilt at the young age of 5 and I have been wearing them ever since. Along with my Father and all my brothers( Up grew up in a family of 11,Strength in numbers I guess). Everbody just says OH its the Kilt guy and moves on. In fact I have had non kilted locals beat me to the punch as it were with rude people (Mainly those Damn Yankees But that is another story). So keep it up and continue to wear your Cilt with Pride and in Good health!!
I even wear my KILTS on post and have never heard anything but positive remarks.

Cilt
If you're going to spell "kilt" as "cilt", make sure you don't make a spelling reversal with the center letters, or I'll begin to think that you're... ah... different. ;)

One other course of action, which invariably puts these people on the run is to quote legal statute ate them. Something along the lines of "Oh, you may think that your comment is acceptable but you are in breach of the Protection from Harassment Act 1997. If you continue in that vein I may have to bring this to the attention of the police" Since most people don't know much about the law the fact that you can quote such things is usually enough to dissuade them.
I havent needed to use the harrassment laws but have a good working knowledege of Sale of Goods and related acts and this has served me well.
