The buckle may "slop" a little, i.e., slide some due to the extra room, but it'll be OK once you get it on snug. (If it's not snug, it may slip sideways a bit during the wearing thereof.)
I would recommend a standard kilt belt for a starter as well. You can always change the buckle for a different look and level of formality. If you wear the kilt mostly during the day, I would suggest a dark brown since that's "traditional" for day wear--if anything is really traditional any more.
P. S. You ought to get one like CavScout makes since it'll still be around when your grandchildren are old.
