It is hideous, and an appalling waste of money. I watched them building it, on an off, and thought all along that it was an eyesore and a piece of environmental pollution - it's located just across the way from Holyroodhouse Palace and the Salisbury Crags and spoils the view of both of them.
It's also hypocritical: there are bi-lingual signs all over the tourist bits, but once you pass through the doors into the members' and functionaries' area there is no Gaelic to be seen anywhere.
I never understood why the Royal High School wasn't used except for politicians cupidity and desire to waste some more of the taxpayers' money: even so a billion pounds is way over the top.

Yeah, that's what I thought. The first time I saw the building, I was really surprised. Especially the inside...it looks like something from an L Ron Hubbard book. And when I learned how much it cost I was even more surprised [insert "thrifty Scot" joke here].

I was there in early September 2005, whilst the Declaration of Arbroath, the Lubeck Letter and the Ayr Manuscript were displayed there. I wasn't sure if we were walking into a mausoleum or a cellar, what with all the bare concrete and the poor lighting.

I've read articles in British papers excoriating everyone involved in the project and the cost was indeed criminal but I'd only seen a couple of pics. The entrance and the meeting chamber.
Now seeing the whole thing gives me a sense of the true er..... well..... is spectacular hideousity too insulting? Wow!
The Denver Art Museum just looks strange to me.

OH, my Lord. It's much worse than I expected.
It looks like something from the 1950s in Soviet Russia for tenement housing. Someone should shoot the architect and then shoot whoever hired the architect.
