Belt etiquette?

Interesting that you say that, James. When the NYC kilted group gathered at St. Andrew's Pub for St. Andrew's Day last month, there were quite a few Scots there (of course).

When we asked one group of ladies visiting from Scotland how we looked, the first comment they made was that we had the belts inside the loops, which-to them-was a big no no.

I wear my belt outside. The loops provide no support for the kilt; the original design of the loops was for the sporran anyway. If you are trying to use the belt to keep your kilt up it doesn't fit right. Now, if you put the belt through I wouldn't say you were wrong but since it serves no purpose (other than to possibly pull the kilt badly) why would you.

I never use the loops for a more practical reason though. I don't find a stiff leather belt comfortable if I am driving any distance. Not having the belt through the loops helps since it is easier to slip the belt on and off.

It is academic to me. I don't have any belt loops on my kilt. Guess I need to prepare myself for that day. I'm no expert, but if you are talking about the two loops on the back side of a kilt, I guess I thought they were there as a guide for the Sporan belt.

Cavscout at Oconee Leather makes great belts, plain or with Celtic knot work.

I just like those two prong work belts from Home depot and Lowes for casual. I find that the nickle plated rectangular buckles go better for dressing up, but tend to be too shiny to people looking at you.

I concur. The belts from Home Depot are actually quite nice - especially at $10 each. Though their finish is limited to a natural finish. I'm in the process of dying mine black now. More work than I had planned on - couldn't get a leather shop to do it.

I picked up an nice brown oil tan work belt for about twenty at Lowes, AWP brand, and I like it much much more than the other kilt belts with the rectangular hook buckles. I would even go for one of those black woven pvc belts, but I don't do formal so much. Good luck dyeing your belt, I hope it comes out exactly as you want.

So far so good. I'm on my third dye layer and third rubbing. It is still looking good.

Can you post a pic or a link of the belt? I can't find it on their website.
