The effect generated by pleating to no stripe is nothing short of stunning. I wonder what other tartans would lend themselves well to that style of pleating. Also curious if that effect is possible with box pleats.

This kind of pleating works well when all of the colors are comparable in tone. If there's a lot of contrast from stripe to stripe, you tend to get the dreaded lawn chair effect.
You can't make this work with box pleats unless you have a tartan with a really big single color block. The brown block in the IOS is only a bit more than an inch across. You'd really need a tartan with about a 2" single color block to have enough width of single color for a "no stripe" pleat. Not many tartans meet this requirement, actually.
Cheers,
Barb

Here's mine done to "no stripe" by the mystery kilt maker. I think this may be one of the first Isle of Skye kilts pleated this way to show up on XMarks.

And this is the reason I bought an IOS and had it pleated this way.

One of our sponsors is still offering this tartan in a machine sewn 8 yard kilt for a decent price.

Well, that price at "one of our sponsors" is about as low as it gets for an eight yard kilt. If you look at some of the responses on the thread that you started about Kilt Culture, you'll see that several of the respondents (including me) mention that they were initially put off by the cost factor of kilts...until they got some counseling from the forum about some of the lower priced options that were available.
IOS is currently available only in wool and costs like most of the wool tartans do. I was chatting with one of the ladies at a Hancock's Fabric a while back and she got all sneery about how "...they got you guys over a barrel with that tartan stuff...ain't no fabric worth that much money..." to which I could only reply that in my experience it's very nice stuff and that it's very specialized and worth the money. I've pretty much come to the point where I'm only interested in wool or pv kilts from now on but that's me...YMMV as they say on the internet.
There have been some rumblings about IOS being produced in pv...if that comes to pass, it'll probably be less expensive than the wool. Check out a copy of Barb's Book (a.k.a. THE Book) and you'll see how much work goes into a well made kilt...it seems like very simple work but has to be done to a reasonably precise standard. Hence, the cost...

Oh yes, I understand how and why they are expensive. That's just my broke, unemployed college student talking. Of course, other people boggle at how much I'm willing to pay for a skein of yarn to make socks. My hesitation at the price of a kilt has less to do with the actual number than ratio of price to bank account balance. ;)

I always keep that in mind before I think bad of someone else's kilt. There's always someone else who has a better one and so on.

Email them, the responses sometimes take a day or two, but I have always had good communication from Iain and David. Mine are both pleated to the sett.
Considering that is 8 yards of 16oz wool that normally sells for up to $65/ yard without being made into a kilt, it's a heck of a good deal. Especially for a tartan that is so sought after.
