The Saltire would not do it for me either. I certainly am glad you are second guessing it as a viable option. If I were you I would look at L&M Sporrans I have two of thier sporrans, a daywear and a sealskin dress, while I realize you can not have a sealskin in the US they offer a faux version. If those are not your idea of a dress sporran then I also say a Ferguson Britt may be the way to go, I've also got two of them, and have had nothing but compliments from them, they are wonderful sporrans, and I'm sure you would enjoy one for years to come.

Both of these options are going to be relitively expensive however in my mind you get what you pay for.

Grey... Now that's an idea! And honestly, I really dislike the Ferguson Britt sporrans. I think they're incredibly ugly. But then, we all have our own taste and style. The L&M ones, on the other hand, look great. I now need to find someone who carries them. I like the grey sealskin ones. Thanks for the advice.

Ok, Nighthawk. It looks like USAK, Scottish Tartans Museum, and Stillwater all deal in L&M sporrans. I think it works out that you go to the L&M site pick out all the features, it gives you some kind of code or something, then you give that to one of the dealers and they order your sporran.

If I'm wrong about this, then hopefully someone will disagree with me and explain it correctly, or even better, one of the L&M dealers on the forum will splain it.

    Hope it works out.

I wore a white rabbit sporran at my wedding, too. it looked great next to my bride's dress, but is too bright for pretty much everything else. For formal occasions, I now wear a gray rabbit sporran that I got from Frugal Corner (http://www.thefrugalcorner.com/sporrans.htm). I like it a lot and you can't beat the price. I don't care for that Saltire thing at all. Too costumey.

I've posted pics of my collection along with other sporran related items and here's my haypenny's worth of opinion:

Go with an L&M from any of the suggested dealers (USAK, Scottish Tartans Museum, and Stillwater) since they only selll through their dealers. You might forget the seal sporrans if you read my post on importing seal sporrans to the US. Bit of politics, but the short answer is that most Canadian sporrans are made with fur seal causing an importaion headache.

One advantage to L&M is that you can look at how your custom sporran will look on a tartan. find one as close to your clergy tartan as possible.

I have 25+ sporrans and the L&M build your sporran tool is a serious temptation.

    Lead me not into temptation...

For the dressier occasions, I would go with gray (wild) bunny fur and chromed cantle. I prefer a plain black leather with a Celtic medallion on the flap for day wear. Just a matter of taste. When I get a bit more time, I will try my hand at making a Rob Roy for everyday dress.

I'm so glad you've come away from the Saltire Sporran idea. Fine if you are following the tartan army and watching Scotland playing footy but I don't see it working anywhere else.

I like Panache's suggestion; that sporran looks great.

You already have a dress sporran. How about a hunting sporran to dress the kilt down a tad.

This one is high-end, but it's a great style.

Actually, Nighthawk, it really was Panache's post about the shoes that pushed me in that direction. I needed black dress shoes, so I looked at the Target web site and saw some that might be what I was looking for in a shoe. Happened to be out and about, so stopped in and looked at the Oxford Teddy shoes they offered. They were ok, but I went across the street to a shoe store and picked out something that was a little better quality while still affordable to me.

These were basically the same kind of shoe as at Target, but a bit shinier and a little nicer looking: higher quality leather and construction... They were priced at what I had budgeted for shoes, so I went with them. If I had less cash, I would have gone with the Target shoes and been all right with it.

And yes, they will go with a kilt outfit I am starting to put together... As well as, the suits I bought the other day. That's just the way it has to be.
