Thanks for the link. I read in the paper that there is a local (Albany, NY) pipe band called Oran Mor Pipe Band that is competing in grade 1. It looks like they failed to qualify, though.

It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom -- for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself.

And SFU does it again. These guys are so awesome. It's a thrill to get to hear them live at the Enumclaw Games.

Just because you are paranoid doesn't mean they aren't out to get you.

Oran Mor is indeed from the Albany area, although they have pipers and drummers from all over the NE. The son of one of our Grade 3 pipers is the Pipe Major (Andrew Douglas, who played with SFU for several years while he was in school in BC). They did pretty well for having competed for the first time in Gr 1 at Worlds. Here's what was in an email from a friend who was at Worlds:
"They tied the 78th* in Piping in the qualifier, beat LA Scots (who had trailing drones) and also finished ahead of Peel Regional police – other than SFU, were the best North American band."
*78th Frasers from Canada

Barb, maybe I'm misinterpreting the results, but it looks like Triumph Street, the 78th and Alberta Caledonia were all ahead of Oran Mor overall. They were ahead of Peel and LA Scots, though. In piping, they did tie the 78th, but were still behind Triumph Street and AlCal. I agree, it was a good result for their first Grade 1 at Worlds.

I'm going to trust the ears that were there live moreso than my old ears listening to a streaming broadcast, but boy, FMM sure sounded really, really good.
Regardless, congratulations to Terry and Jack Lee, Reid Maxwell, Jori Chisholm and all the SFU musicians. Good on ya, lads and lasses!
Why, a child of five could understand this. Quick -- someone fetch me a child of five!

I went up to SFU and watched the pipe band do their rehearsal for the worlds just a couple of weeks ago. I was awesome and I can't say I am surprised they won again.
