Galician,
I went back to by post and edited it to finish my thought.
Actually thinking about it further, I think it would be quite amusing for me to wear one of those "Scotsmen" outfits as a Halloween costume to by kid's school.
Can you picture it?
Teacher: What the heck are you wearing?
Me: It's a Scotsman outfit
Teacher: Well it looks stupid and nothing like your real kilt and stuff
Me: I know
Teacher: Why are you wearing it?
Me: It's my Halloween Costume. I'm going as a stereotypical Scotsman.
Teacher: Huh?
Me: Hey it's Halloween! Is there anything more scary than gross stereotypes? Now if you'll excuse me I have to go borrow money, get drunk, and then see to the warp engines because they cannae take much more. Also as ye can ken Im ma dour old fella an I really na want to talk to ya na more.

Cheers
Jamie

I'd never wear it and it is very "stereotypical" - but I can see why people do. It's just a joke but I dont really find it funny to be honest.
It is in truth not for glory, nor riches, nor honours that we are fighting, but for freedom -- for that alone, which no honest man gives up but with life itself.

Well, this thread got more response than I thought.
Sorry for posting in the wrong section, I didn't see an off-topic section.
After reading this, I can see the humor in the costume. As gross of a stereotype as it is, I suppose for a costume it's alright.
I stand rather well corrected. I really must stop staying up so late
Still not a glengarry.

Last year my Dad, who was born just north of Aberdeen went to a party as a Stereotypical Scotsman, he had a fake red beard, wore one of my kilts, we got him a ghillie shirt, and he wore a Jimmy hat on his head. He was a big hit at the party. Hey if you can't laugh at yourself who can you laugh at?

Ah, but Jamie, it would be horrible for you to do that, given how many elegant and dashing kilt outfits you have. Just think of what they say imitation is, for those who can't pull off your superb sense of style.

I really would not wear the shot glass bandalier to school...lol unless it's for choco milk shots...lol but to be honest.. Go to any Halloween shop and see all the stereotypical costumes...Irish, Native American, Star Fighters, Witches, Goblins, ect... if one was to wear their heart on their sleeve.. it's easy to be offended.. but hey... It's just a costume, not meant to be taken seriously... excuse me while I don my Pirate costume.. Trapse the streets with a pack of kids searching for my bucket of booty... or sweets... Which ever comes first.... lol

There are just so many things I find wrong. Sporran too small, socks too short, that is NOT a glengarry, they call it a skirt (hey, that one actually IS a skirt), the belt has no buckle, no idea whats going on with those shoes. What really gets me though, is that sash. What is with the sash. It has 4 freaking shot-glasses attached to it. That bugs me. The stereotyping going on there is just nuts.
I wonder if I can get a 'Big Shot American' outfit done up by them. Stained cotton a-shirt, mullet wig, cowboy boots, torn jeans, maybe a replica handgun.
Sorry, I'm ranting.
Yeah, I was in Party City the other day with my kids and someone came over to me and said "Wow! That kilt looks so real!" to which I responded "...well... there's a good reason for that..."
