It's pretty simple, but still a bit on the dressier side, IMHO, and is reasonably priced for a handmade knife. The 1095 blade means that this would be a functional knife as well as a thing of beauty. . .
I will vouch for the quality of the work from Scotia Metal Work. I own one of the early lion rampnat rings he made, and I've looked at his blades up close and personal, and they're very nice pieces.

the scots guard kilt pin question was meant in jest (thus the ;P). not having served i know the reasons not to...also as a piper i know that as well. however, this does bring up the point of the safety pin style (which i had not thought of before) since that is sort of a regimental (albeit with lack of ensignia)/ military is that doable? i am just tired of the crappy claymore with clan insignia that breaks or falls off all the time kilt pin. and i want something a little cooler....fancier....better.
as for sginean, i wouldn't get a regimental one for the same reason i wouldn't actually wear a regimental kilt pin. it's not right and i'd feel like a poser. although i do really like one of the http://www.rainnea.com/ ones and the antique or pipers sgian at http://www.houseoflabhran.net/highla...dkiltpins.html
btw.....what does OR stand for?
out of curiosity since i'm also looking for new jackets....is it possible to get black tweed? and whom would anyone recommend to get a really nice black jacket and vest from. argyle/craille style with no gauntlets on the cuffs.

OR (or OR's) = Other Ranks in a military context, meaning soldiers who are not Commissioned Officers, Warrant Officers, Senior or Junior Non Commissioned Officers. Other Ranks include Privates, Riflemen, Troopers, Gunners among others.

You might want to consider a Miracle brooch pin for your kilt pin. It looks pretty dressy and has quite a history. (There was a whole thread on this a while back, but it may be gone now.) Take a look at http://www.xmarksthescot.com/forum/p...=duke+rothesay to see HRH wearing both the blanket pin and the brooch type. I think they look quite dressy. In fact I have the following two:

I wear this one with the Robertson Hunting tartan

I think this brown one will look good with my new Ulster Weathered (whenever it arrives from Barb) or the weathered Robertson

I've got a few of these now:

They are ebayable (search for "Celtic Brooch" or similar.) Made by St Justine's Pewter Jewellery in Cornwall and on ebay at least, they are usually priced at less than or around the same as the ubiquitous claymore pin.
Not necessarily traditional but nicely different in my opinion.

The military "safety pin" style of kilt pin is not any different than many civilian styles of kilt pin, so yes wearing one will not cause upset. In fact I wear my grandfather's Gordon Highlanders kilt pin and have done for nearly 50 years. In truth I had not even considered that I might be considered as "posing", it is a fair point though, but as it is not carrying a regimental badge of any sort I don't think it would upset anyone.

If you check on Ebay fairly regularly, you'll see very nice traditional (1920's through 1960's) style sterling silver kilt pins come up quite often.
A very popular design was a sword with a targe superimposed. Sometimes the targe has a Highland Longship (like a Viking ship) on it, sometimes the targe is covered with Celtic knotwork etc. Anyhow, to my eye those are "real" kilt pins. I'm with you in that I don't like the modern cookiecutter sword kilt pins with clan crest.
Also, very nice old sginean come up on Ebay all the time, often mounted in sterling silver and nowadays selling far below their worth.
Many of the newly designed kilt pins and sginean look hideous to me.

I don't have a Sgian Dubh yet because I don't spend money except in the spring (job related), however, I did find some simple kilt/skirt pins at Jo-Ann's fabrics. Two for $7.00 USD.
