Of course they had him in the most ill fitting utilikilt he probably owned in the "befores". Can't have him looking like knows what he's doing before hand or we'd see what a sham this fashion "expert" is. Did you notice that all of the afters had them in dress casuals or full dress clothes and all the befores had them in casual "couching" clothes? All of them could have used a little help but ANYONE will look better in a suit than they did in sweats. And the befores were in harsh "white-light" while the afters were in the Oprah studio "Love Lighting" were everyone looks like a million bucks after a few seconds with a makeup artist. I do have to admit that the kiltie's wife look amazing in her after photo. She kind of reminded me of what a politician's wife looks like on the campain trail. Except happy.

There is a decent and "together" way to dress in public and people should take a little time to at least not look filthy or homeless as time and money allow but shows like this put so much emphasis on the outward appearance and how "in" your look is that they tend to ignore the fact that you can look good and have different taste than whatever the latest fashion trend is. Remember, big shoulder pads, stirrup pants, members only jackets, and leisure suits were all brought to us by fashion "experts". That plaid suit on Oprah will fall into that same category in a year and the good ol' tartan kilt will still be around and going strong. Stick with tried and true classics, and you never go wrong.

Joanne nominated her sister Linda and her brother-in-law Clark for a makeover because their looks aren't just outdated—they're from another century! -

Nine years ago, Clark discovered a love for a peculiar fashion item: the kilt. Now, he wears one every day—even to class, where he works as a law professor. "He has a summer kilt, a plaid kilt, a camo kilt," Joanne says. "He even has a sport kilt."

Most days, Linda can be found wearing mom jeans, a baggy flannel shirt and Birkenstock sandals with socks. Like her wardrobe, her hair is in much need of an update. "She told me the last time she cut her hair was 1985," Joanne says.

Clark says he hasn't worn pants in nine years, but today, he's looking dapper in a perfectly tailored suit. However, there is one reason Clark might return to his 17 kilts at home. "I tell you, this is the honest truth," he says. "Kilts are chick magnets like nothing I've ever seen before!"

Linda's makeover wasn't just about a new look but about accepting herself. While Ken worked his magic on Linda's hair, he says she couldn't look in the mirror. "The hardest thing for Linda to do was look at herself," he says.

Now, Linda says she feels glamorous. "And I'm also glad not to be wearing the pants in the family!" she says.

    I second that.

These make-over shows are about making radical changes, whether any of the prior outfit would have been accepable or not. As such, since he started out in a kilt, you know that they would not keep him in one.

Jack Daw is right, they go for radical changes to get the most reaction. If you've got long hair, they hack it off. If you have light hair, it gets dyed dark... and so on.

I really don't have a problem if someone wants a change, but I get tired of hearing shows slam on people for not doing this or that. It can also turn into a circus that really cements the whole "don't be different!" thing.

That said, I embrace my silver-streaked, long hair, and wear what I'm happiest wearing (and my hubby certainly doesn't complain! ;) ). I definitely don't need a makeover (now, a little cash to buy what I want to wear would be helpful! Ha!).

I stopped watching TV a few years back and do not miss any of that stuff. The other pop-guru thing for a while was to tell people to throw away everything you haven't used in the last year. I'm sure that one probably ruined some lives; lead me, oh, Wise One! Right into the bug zapper.

Still have long hair though, Cynthia.

I know! I have NEVER seen a makeover show where they didn't want to cut a woman's hair short. I could never be happy with short hair.

May be just an Argyle Jacket and a solid coloured shirt would have been just fine.
