I'm rather unimaginative when it comes to hose with my modern Black Watch kilt. In the past I tended to go with forest green or navy blue, but lately I've been wearing khaki (from What Price Glory). I usually wear red garters or flashes for a spot of color.

With a tartan like Black Watch, you can really afford to move away from the colors in the tartan itself. I've seen someone wearing a tartan with the same primary colors as the BW paired with the khaki hose and red garters, and it looks great; although it was a bit casual.
For evening wear, something I've done that I like is to pair the hose color and shirt. In my favorite combination, the color is found (in very small doses) in the tartan, but like the Duke of Argyll shows us, this is not necessary. I like what he does, pairing his hose color with the primary color of his wife's dress. It does make for a great photo op.

House of Cheviot makes a hose colour they call "sage", another they call "louden", and either would look great, as would red, claret, "ancient blue", "saltire blue", grey, and many others. Personally I'd avoid navy blue, dark green, black, white, and cream.

I think that one photo of the Duke and Duchess of Argyll is nice, but really I do not think he planned the colour of his socks with the colour of his wife's frock. He just likes to wear that particular shade of pink hose. I have been with him on a number of occasions and can assure you he wasn't matching socks with what his wife was wearing!

As several posters have mentioned, a whole variety of colour choices will go with Black Watch.Xman’s suggestion of red flashes is right on the money, and I had the feeling that Mikilt’s suggestion of navy with green flashes was a denial of this possibility.
Not that navy and green won’t work, but they seem a little too matchy-matchy.
Khaki hose and red flashes worked fine enough with my regimental kilt in Graham of Montrose (Black Watch with added white stripes).
And while I barely know Argyll from a bar of soap (I have seen his pink hose before, here at X Marks), I would certainly not have imagined him to be matching the duchess’s shocking pink!
I might even go as far as to say the plainer the kilt (and aside from mono-colour kilts [including Elcho], or Canadian Irish, Black Watch is about as plain as you go), the more it will take being jazzed up in this way.
 Regards,
 Mike

I hear what you are saying about being too matchy. It's a tendency I am working to overcome. Thanks for your input!

Sorry...I could not resist, but I do think the colors would work.

I wore these colors with a similar tartan...Keith Austin ancient.

Black watch has the same coloring as the Keith modern (just an opposite pattern) so wear the dark green or navy blue. I usually where the dark green with my Keith.
